Joelinton Scored Twice in His 100th Premier League as Newcastle Move Norwich Closer to Relegation
Newcastle’s first win at Carrow Road since January 1994 came thanks to Joelinton’s two goals in his 100th Premier League game. After Joelinton and Bruno Guimares both scored in a 3-0 win over struggling Norwich, Eddie Howe described them as “a joy to work with.”
The Brazilian Joelinton first broke the deadlock in the 35th minute with a feathery drive. Into the top corner, then added a second six minutes later. Guimares beat a defender to Tim Krul’s attempted pass out of the back. At the opening of the second half, before taking a touch and skillfully lobbing the goalkeeper.
Joelinton got a standing ovation
Joelinton got a standing ovation from the traveling support. “They’re a joy to work with,” the manager stated. They do possess that inner fortitude. They’re both wonderful folks who have become indispensable members of the team. They’ve established and have a large following. The way they play has a bit of flamboyance to it. I’m ecstatic about both of them. “May it continue for a long time.”
Newcastle became in 19th place when Howe took control. After losing their first 14 games, they found themselves in a situation that no Premier League side had ever recovered from. They have, however, won 10 of their past 14 league games, including four in a row, and are now in the top part of the table.
When Kieran Dowell picks by Mathias Normann, Norwich had a chance, but he fired his effort over the bar. Teemu Pukki put in a one-on-one situation with Martin Dubravka shortly after. But he allowed defenders to close in on him while attempting to take the ball around the goalkeeper.
Murphy found Allan Saint-Maximin, who passed it to Sean Longstaff, who fed Joelinton, who curled his shot into the top corner. The goal was reviewed by VAR for probable offside, but Murphy was found to be onside. Murphy was involved in the buildup again, surging into the area before sending in an unmarked Joelinton, who slotted past Krul.
Newcastle added a third goal
In an attempt to get the ball to Kenny McLean. Krul delivered it straight to Guimares just outside the area in an attempt to clear his lines. Under no pressure, the Brazilian took a touch before lofting a stunning finish over Krul’s head and into the net.
Then Jonathan Rowe played in Pukki in the 65th minute, and Norwich had a chance to equalize. The striker’s attempt, though, went just wide of the far post, and the Canaries were unable to recover the advantage.
Dean Smith bemoaned yet another defensive failure as Norwich remained trapped at the bottom of the table. Eight points short of the last safe berth with five games remaining.
