Philippines Team is Hoping for a Top Three Finish at the SEA Games
The Philippines Team will compete in two Southeast Asian (SEA) Games this year. The first was in Hanoi, Vietnam, from May 12 to 23, and the second was in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, from May 5 to 16.
President of the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) Abraham Tolentino made the statement after Cambodia’s SEA Games Federation conference in Seam Reap over the weekend approved the tournament, which would comprise 40 sports, including showpiece athletics and medal-rich aquatics.
Team Philippines wants to establish a goal
Chef de mission Ramon Fernandez says two weeks before the regional extravaganza begins on May 12 and ends on May 23.
“My personal goal is to be in the top three,” Fernandez, a commissioner at the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), stated.
Despite training challenges because of the COVID-19 epidemic, the former PBA four-time MVP believes he can finish in the top three.
Fernandez’s hope stems from the national team’s overall achievement in the 30th Southeast Asian Games, which the country hosted in 2019.
The Philippines won the overall championship
The Philippines won the overall championship for the first time, with 149 golds, 117 silvers, and 121 bronzes. Team Vietnam came in second with 98-85-105, while Thailand came in third with 92-103-123. Indonesia was fourth (72-84-111), followed by Malaysia (56-57-71) and Singapore (56-57-71). (53-46-68).
In prior interviews, Fernandez said that he expects the athletes who won gold for the Philippines. In the previous edition and the silver medalists to improve on their past performances. And help the Philippines achieve its goal of winning gold this time.
However, Fernandez recognizes that repeating as champion will be challenging. A job made more difficult because it eliminated several athletic disciplines included in the 2019 meeting in this year’s staging.
Now that Vietnam is hosting the event, they consider it a major contender for the crown.
Because there will be few activities outside of Hanoi. Fernandez said there are just minor delegation worries currently, such as athlete, coach, official travel information, and billeting.
The provinces of Hai Phong, Nam Dinh, and Quang Ninh will host some activities.
The Philippine delegation at the SEA Games consists of 987 people, comprising 646 athletes and 296 coaches and officials. The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) has 45 non-delegation members. For whom the PSC is offering help in arranging flights and billeting.
