UST Defeats FEU in First Game of the UAAP Season 84 Women’s Volleyball

In Manila, Philippines – The University of Santo Tomas (UST) overcame some nerves in the first set to defeat Far Eastern University (FEU) in the UAAP Season 84 women’s volleyball competition at the Mall of Asia Arena Thursday.

UST won in straight sets despite losing starting middle blocker Imee Hernandez to a left ankle injury early in the first set. Eya Laure, the new team captain, led the squad with 14 points, while Camille Victoria added 12 points.

UST head coach Kungfu Reyes said, “Medyo wobbly ‘yung performance.” “‘Yung mga unforced errors namin masyadong marami,’ naman. ‘Yun ang kailangan namin i-correct, but fortunately, kami nanalo in straight sets.”

Hernandez went down with an injury halfway through the first set after falling on her left ankle and twisting it. Before FEU made a late push, they still had control of the game and were up 24-19.

Eya Laure leads the way as UST holds off numerous FEU surges to a UAAP Season 84 debut victory. Laure’s errors and an ace by Jean Asis brought the Lady Tams to within one point, 24-23, but Asis’ last serve was too long, allowing the Tigresses to escape.

As the Tigresses fended off multiple Lady Tamaraw outbursts on route to a successful season debut, Eya Laure scored 14 points on 13 attacks and one block.

In the second session, UST jumped out to an 8-0 lead before the Lady Tams battled back, even tying the set at 15 on Victoria’s kill block. KC Galdones’ aces re-established UST’s lead, then Laure blasted back-to-back home runs to secure the victory.

In the third set, Laure scored back-to-back hits to give UST a dominating 17-7 lead. Before her team held off a last-ditch FEU rally.

With an off-the-block assault, veteran Lycha Ebon got the Lady Tams within 3 points. 21-24, but an Ann Rosell Asis service fault on the next play opened the door for the Tigresses’ straight-sets victory.

FEU’s untimely mistakes cost them again in the third set. With Ann Asis’ service line misfire setting the game out of reach for the Team Tigresses. UST held a 33-28 kill edge and a 7-6 service ace advantage. FEU had a 7-4 advantage in blocks, but they also handed up 31 points due to unforced mistakes.

The Lady Tams had no players score double figures, with Ebon collecting nine points.
